Unicorn String Art
Here at Ruffles and Rain Boots, we love all things unicorn. It's just kind of the thing about raising a little girl–and having been a little girl once upon a time myself. And making string art sounded like a lot of fun, so I spent a few minutes making a unicorn string art template–then a few more minutes getting my board ready. The resulting piece of unicorn art is awesome.

Tips to Make a String Art Unicorn
- Start bygrabbing the free printable unicorn string art template. It has nice little spaced-out markings for each nail, if you want that. But keep in mind that you can certainly use less nails than I did. Just remember that the more nails you use, the more detail you'll get. Plus, reducing the number of nails can create more gaps in the strings, so it might look a bit different than mine–which it should, because it's uniquely yours!
- When I decided to make my first string art, I attempted to use a kind of thinnish wood, because I thought it could be simpler to nail and although that was very true, unfortunately, the thin wood ended-up breaking between the nails and I ended up with an outline of a unicorn. And there were no nails still standing. It was not a nice experience. So, my recommendation is to choose a solid wood, something hard (not soft-wood) and about 1/4-inch thick or even a bit more.
- Initially, I picked out a lot of embroidery thread in different colors for this project and others that I wanted, but then I discovered that it's quite significantly less expensive tobuy your embroidery thread in sets like these. So, be smarter than me.
- For your backing wood, go with solids. I get it if you don't want to do black like me, although I chose that so that my unicorn would stand out really well. But use a solid, for sure.

- 2-3 Bright White Embroidery Thread Skeins
- 1-2 Black Embroidery Thread Skeins
- 1-2 Purple Embroidery Thread Skeins
- 1-2 Teal Embroidery Thread Skein
- 1-2 Light Peach Embroidery Thread Skein
- 1-2 Gold Embroidery Thread Skein
- 50-60 Finishing Nails
- Printable Template
Tools
- Hammer
- Painter's Tape
Instructions
- Start by printing the template, then taping it to the wood square with the unicorn centered as best as possible.
- Place nails, hammering them into to the wood about halfway, in each of the designated spots on the template. Then remove the template from the wood.
- Tie one end of the white embroidery thread to one of the nails lining the horn of the unicorn, then start wrapping the white thread around each of the nails, working across the head and neck, excluding the strands of hair, criss-crossing your threads and building a layer of string in the whole area. Once you have covered the whole area, tie the end of the white embroidery thread off to a nail.
- Repeat stringing in the following order: the horn, pink mane strands, teal mane strands, purple mane strands,, then add a black outline around each of the elements, to make the whole thing stand out more.
